About Me

Hello! My name is Nicolas Ferrara and I am a licensed physical therapist from Long Island, New York. I graduated from Hofstra University in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a minor in philosophy. I then went on to Stony Brook University where I earned my doctorate in physical therapy in 2016.

I began my writing career shortly after I graduated from physical therapy school because I thought I could do more with my degrees than just treat patients. I wrote for my own website, aimed at other physical therapists, to address issues I saw with current practices. I also wrote for Newgradphysicaltherapy.com, a website devoted to creating content for young physical therapy professionals, and Healthybutsmart.com, a website which critically evaluates health claims about various foods, supplements, treatments, practices, and medical devices. Throughout all of my writing, a constant theme came up: I wanted to provide honest and reasonable interpretations of the scientific literature in order to counter the constant misinformation, confusion, or outright lies I saw in healthcare.

I entered the healthcare field to help people directly. As a physical therapist, I provide first-line care for musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. I am able to directly improve the health of my patients and I might see 15 patients in a typical eight-hour work day. Writing is different though. I can leverage all of the skills I have learned throughout my education and my professional career, and provide information without an upper limit on how many people I can reach. Writing about health allows me to do more than I could do as a physical therapist. The answers to all the questions we want about our health do not come easy, and they require somebody between the scientists doing the research and the public. That person is me.
